The Belchamp Community House is situated in the vibrant and yet elegant village of Belchamp St Paul situated at the North end of the beautiful Stour Valley; a superb setting for your wedding reception or private party!
The House was opened in 1961 having been built by the Bryce Foundation on land given by the late Mr Clare Wayman. The Foundation also provided a similar rural amenity in Birdbrook using the funds donated by the late Mr and Mrs J F C Bryce whose family home had been in Moyns Park. Canon Powell, incumbent of this parish at that time saw the facility in Birdbrook and persuaded the Bryce's to build a second in Belchamp St Paul to serve the parishes of Tilbury-juxta-Clare, Ovington, Belchamp Walter, Belchamp Otten and Belchamp St Paul.
This spectacular facility was entirely equipped, furnished and, in those days maintained by the Foundation. The interior was designed by David Hicks. There was a resident steward, newspapers, television and only a charge of five shillings (25p) for its use. The Bryce's specifically asked that it should be known as the Belchamp Community House and not "centre".
In 1973 the Trustees received a letter from the Foundation stating that funds provided for the maintainance of the House had "dried up" and the local Trustees were now on their own. This obviously called for changes in the administration of the House. Hiring charges were introduced and more effort was made to get the House used by the five parishes and visitors for meetings, fund-raising events and private parties/receptions. The flat was made self-contained and let, many economies made and a caretaker appointed, as well as part-time helpers for the grounds.
The House is now administered by a Board of Trustees, who are obliged to adhere to the rules contained on the Trust Deed.
